How my book came to be

Updated: Mar 24, 2022

What inspired me to write a book about a boy and a magical hanger you may ask, well my son of course!

I have always had a crazy imagination (I plan on writing about that another time) and it seems my son has gotten that too!

As a family we try to keep screen time to a minimum and to encourage our children to play as much as possible and to let the imagination take over.

E.L. (my son) found a hanger and started using it as a sword and then a bow and arrow another time. It seemed to him that a hanger could be anything he wanted it to be.

I mean come on what better way to pretend then with an everyday object!

And with seeing him play with this hanger my mind started to put together this story for him!

And that was my intention to make a story for my baby and only my baby.

I read it to my hubby and sent it over to my mom just so they could enjoy this little story too and with that both of them asked me if I considered publishing it.

Publishing it was not something I had considered, as I did it for my son, but I never do anything without praying about it first and that includes saying yes or no to a question like that.

So with that I took to prayer. My thoughts were everywhere but I know for sure I got my answer and that was to publish! After looking at all the different publishers and writing a few more books about Hanger Boy I knew what to do!

And I sent off my manuscript. I honestly didn’t expect anything back, nothing at all, but a month later I got a letter back saying they wanted to publish my work.

I can tell you, I was so excited I think I scared my kids because of how excited I was. I call my hubby who couldn’t answer right away because he was at work so I texted him to call when he could and then I FaceTimed my mama.

I was so happy and my family was happy for me. My hubby did finally call and he was happy for me. So many emotions at once running through my head not only did the publishers like my work but they thought it was charming and entertaining!

I think by the end of the day I was surprised to see that I could do it…a girl with dyslexia! That is a story that will be told at another point, but a girl with dyslexia could do it. My story could be noticed and after some time I could say I am an author!

So just like my dedication I will always thank and be truly grateful for my mom and hubby who pushed me to see that I could do it and for my children who inspired me and continue to inspire me everyday!
